Young Bar Association of Montréal

I'll talk to my lawyer on Wednesday!

The service

“On Wednesday, I can consult my lawyer!” is a program for youth between the ages of 12 and 20. It gives them the opportunity to consult a lawyer and obtain legal information, at no charge, on the Wednesday following their request between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

This service is offered by volunteer lawyers who have been practicing for less than 10 years and who are members of the YBAM.

A program for youth

During adolescence, youth are constantly facing new life experiences. Problems can arise in relation to work, housing, relationships, drugs and family. However, the resources available to youth in their family, at school or elsewhere are for the most part focused on moral and psychological support. Youth are rarely offered appropriate legal support.

It is in this context that the program “On Wednesday, I can consult my lawyer!” is important. Our volunteers, who are all competent lawyers, will answer questions without making value judgements. Without doubting the competence of school and community resources, we note that the legal sphere is complex and often requires specialized knowledge. Furthermore, our service is completely confidential. This is an important aspect of our program as, often, when youth know a lawyer, they may be reluctant to approach them for fear of revealing an embarrassing situation.

The fact that our service is offered at no charge is also an important factor for youth who are just starting their lives and who rarely have the means to obtain the services of a lawyer without asking for help from their family. The lawyer can direct youth towards appropriate legal resources or simply suggest possible solutions.

Our partners

Promotion of this program is done is collaboration with Montreal area high schools and Cegeps. At the beginning of each school year, the YBAM contacts the schools to remind them of the importance of informing youth of the availability of this program and sends them promotional posters and business cards. The information is posted on the school's bulletin boards, and the school's psychologists, social workers and other professionals are encouraged to distribute the program's business cards.

CLSCs, youth centres and other non-profit youth organizations are also contacted.
