La Maison du Père's charity activities

Supper at La Maison du Père

Each year, the YBAM holds its traditional Supper at La Maison du Père. At this occasion, the YBAM invites its members and members of the magistracy of the Montreal district to serve a meal, provided by the YBAM, to more than three hundred homeless people.


Legal clinic for the Homeless

A legal clinic addressed to the homeless takes place right before the Supper at La Maison du Père, between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm.


Fundraiser and 6@8 – Silent Auction

Within the context of the Supper at La Maison du Père, the YBAM also organize an annual fundraiser of which all profts goes to La Maison du Père Foundation to make sure it continues its commitment in helping the homeless.

In order to raise funds, the YBAM holds a 6@8 cocktail and a silent auction. All proceeds from the activity are given to La Maison du Père Foundation.

YBAM'S annual legal helpline
Again this year the YBAM is renewing its annual legal appointment with the whole Québec population by helding its annual legal helpline. For one weekend, a hundred volunteer lawyers are answering citizen’s questions over the phone and perpetuating the tradition of YBAM’s pro bono within the community.

The clinic provides the occasion for citizens to have access free of charge to a lawyer and be informed of their rights and obligations. Whether it regards family, consumer rights, work, succession, neighbour conflicts, crime, intellectual property, corporate law, etc., volunteer lawyers will answer all questions according to their field of expertise.

Each year, volunteer lawyers answer more than 1200 telephone calls during the weekend of the Clinic. Join our team of volunteers and share your knowledge.

Starter Guide for Businesses
The YBAM is curently working on updating the Starter Guide for Businesses. In order to do so, we are looking for writers with an expertise aspects related to starting a business. Submit your subject or ideas!

The YBAM has developed a guide addressed to entrepreneurs to allow them to learn more about the legal aspects related to starting a business. In total, sixteen texts have been written by various volunteer lawyers working in different fields of practice.

Legal Advice for Businesses
This service was put in place by the YBAM in order to allow entrepreneurs to discuss their project and various related legal aspects with a volunteer lawyer free of charge. This takes place within a one hour meeting and is specifically addressed to entrepreneurs who are starting a business.

All legal aspects of a business start up can be discussed such as legal form, legal publicity, organisation of the company, taxation, labour law, etc.

If you wish to share your knowledge with an entrepreneur who is starting a business, please complete the Registration Form.

Afterwards, you will receive from time to time an email from the YBAM’s pro bono legal services coordinator proposing a match with an entrepreneur.

If you accept the proposition, you will be provided with the coordinates of the entrepreneur and you will be asked to contact them to arrange a one hour meeting at your convenience.

I'll talk to my lawyer on Wednesday!
I'll talk to my lawyer on Wednesday! is a free of charge service that allows youth ages 12 to 20 to discuss with a lawyer, every Wednesday between 4 pm and 6 pm, on all questions of legal nature related to work, rent, drugs, family, etc.

The main objective of the program is to allow them to  be inform on their rights, obligations, recourses and the functioning of the judicial system.

As a volunteer lawyer, you will  provide some guidance, strategies and inform them of the applicable law.

Based on your field of practice, you will receive from time to time an email from the legal pro bono services coordinator asking you to answer a question.

If you wish to act as a volunteer lawyer, please fill out the Registration Form.





Shall you accept the offer, you will be provided with the youngster’s contact information in order to contact him the following Wednesday between 4 and 6 pm.

Public services – Wednesday, I’ll speak with my lawyer!
The YBAM take part of the Salon Visez Droit of the Bar of Montreal
Held by the Bar of Montreal, the Salon VISEZ DROIT offers the public four days of activities related to justice.

This event is an opportunity to inform people and heighten people’s awareness of their various rights and obligations and to promote a better understanding of the judicial system.

It is a great opportunity for the YBAM to promote its pro bono legal services such as  I'll talk to my lawyer on Wednesday! and Legal Advice for Businesses.

Salon VISEZ DROIT of the Bar of Montreal

Preparation service for a hearing before the Court of Québec, small claims division
The Preparation service for a hearing before the Court of Québec, small claims division allows people to meet a volunteer lawyer free of charge for twenty minutes in order to receive information on the preparation and procedure of a hearing before the Court of Québec, small claims division.
 
By providing this service, you will be asked to answer questions and help individuals with the preparation of files that will be subject to a hearing. No legal advice will be given within the context of these meetings.

The meetings take place from Monday to Friday between noon (12) and 2 pm at the Montreal Court House.

Once you have filled out the Registration form, you will be registered on the mailing list of the YBAM’s legal pro bono services coordinator.

Every two months, you will receive an email requesting your availability for the following weeks. You will be free to choose the day (s) that suit you, no minimal implication is required. You will be given a volunteer guide and a list of subjects to go through with the people you will be helping. Hence, you will have the necessary information to guide them in the context of preparation for their hearing.

Preparation service for a hearing before the Commission des relations du travail
The preparation service for a hearing before the Commission des relations du travail allows individuals to meet a volunteer lawyer, free of charge, for a period of twenty minutes in order to receive information on the preparation and procedure of a hearing before the Commission des Relations du Travail.

By providing this service, you will be asked to answer questions and help individuals with the preparation of files that will be subject to a hearing. No legal advice will be given within the context of these meetings.

This service is solely available for employees who wish to undertake legal action against their union when the latter does not respect its obligation to just representation (sections 47.2 ss of the Code du Travail).

Meetings take place Wednesdays between 12 noon and 2 pm at the Montréal Court House.

Once you have filled out the Registration form you will be registered on the email distribution list of the coordinator of the YBAM’s pro bono Legal services.

Every two months, you will receive an email requesting your availability for the following weeks. You will be free to choose the day (s) that suit you, no minimal implication is required. You will be given a volunteer guide and a list of subjects to go through with the people you will be helping. Hence, you will have the necessary information to guide them in the preparation of their hearing.

Two trainings of two hours recognized by the Barreau du Québec will be offered free of charge to volunteers of this service.

The preparation service for a hearing before the Régie du Logement allows individuals to meet a volunteer lawyer free of charge for a period of twenty minutes in order to receive information on the preparation and procedure of a hearing before the Régie du Logement.

In providing this service, you will be asked to answer questions and help individuals with the preparation of files that will be subject to a hearing. No legal advice will be given within the contexts of these meetings.

Meetings will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12 noon and 2 pm at the Montréal Court House.

Once you have filled out the Registration Form you will be registered on the email distribution list of the coordinator of the YBAM’s pro bono Legal services.

Every two months, you will receive an email requesting your availability for the following weeks. You will be free to choose the day (s) that suit you, no minimal implication is required.

You will be given a volunteer guide and a list of subjects to go through with the people you will be helping. Hence, you will have the necessary information to guide them in the preparation of their hearing.

Public services – Preparation for a Hearing
Observation-Pairing Internship
The McGill University, l’UQÀM and the Université de Montréal offer to students, in collaboration with the YBAM, an observation-pairing internship. This program allows law students from these universities to attend a pro bono legal consultations of the YBAM'S preparation service for an hearing.

During the meetings between the volunteer lawyer and the litigant, the law student acts as an observer. Following the meeting, the student may discuss with the lawyer about his observations and ask questions.
The mission of the pro bono legal services Committee is to improve access to justice by offering diverse legal services free of charge to the population of Montréal. Hence, the committee is responsible for the implementation of the YBAM’s pro bono legal services and the community activities it organises.

As part of its mission, the Committee also maintains ties with various representatives of the legal community, such as the Bar of Montreal, the Quebec Bar, Pro Bono Québec, Éducaloi and the Canadian Bar Association.
